Snapchat's 'Download My Data' Is Confusing. Here’s What You Actually Get.

Requesting your data is easy, but getting your photos is hard. Here's exactly what's inside the export and why it might not be what you expect.

The "Easy" Button Isn't So Easy

Requesting your data from Snapchat feels like a solution.

You click a button, wait a few days, and get a ZIP file. Problem solved, right?

Unfortunately, opening that ZIP file reveals a messy truth: your photos aren't actually inside.

What You Think You're Getting vs. Reality

Most users expect a folder full of JPEGs and MP4s, organized by date.

  • A bunch of HTML files
  • Some JSON data
  • A list of *links* to your photos

Snapchat doesn't package your files for you. They give you a map to find them, and a very short window of time to go collect them.

The Components of the Export

1. The HTML Files

These are meant to be viewed in a browser. They show you a gallery of your memories, but to get them, you have to click "Download" on every single one.

2. The JSON Files

This is the raw data. memories_history.json is the most important file here. It contains the timestamps, locations, and the direct download links.

This is the critical failure point for most people. The links in your export are temporary. They expire in 24-48 hours.

Why This System Fails Users

Snapchat has valid reasons for this (hosting costs, security), but it shifts the burden entirely to you.

  • Time Pressure: You have to download everything before links die.
  • Manual Labor: Clicking 1,000+ links is physically painful.
  • Browser Limits: frequent downloads often crash browsers or hit limits.
  • No Organization: Even if you succeed, you get a pile of files with random filenames.

Is There a Better Way?

The official export is the *first* step, not the last.

Once you have that ZIP file, you have two paths:

Path A: The Hard Way (Manual)

Open the HTML file, start clicking download buttons, and hope you finish before the links expire.

Path B: The Smart Way (Automated)

Use a tool that reads the memories_history.json file and does the downloading for you.

If you filter that JSON file correctly, you can extract every link, download every file, and use the timestamps to set the correct dates on your photos.

Automating the Pain Away

This is exactly why we built LeaveSnap.

We take that confusing ZIP file, parse the hidden data, and secure your files before the links expire.

  • No coding required
  • No manual clicking
  • No missing dates

If you've already requested your data, don't let those links expire while you figure out how to open a JSON file.

Secure your memories now.
