Why Snapchat Exports Lose Their Timestamps (And How to Fix It).

Ever noticed your saved Snaps all have 'Today' as their date? Here is why manual saving ruins your library's timeline and how to preserve it.

The "Date: Today" Problem

You finally save an old memory to your phone. You open your gallery to reminisce... and it's at the very top.

It says it was taken today.

Your 2017 vacation is now co-mingled with your 2025 lunch. The timeline is broken.

Understanding Digital Fingerprints (EXIF)

Photos have hidden "fingerprints" called EXIF data. This data stores the camera model, GPS coordinates, and—most importantly—the exact second the photo was taken.

When you "Export Snap" or manually download from a link, Snapchat often strips this metadata or replaces the "Date Created" with the "Date Downloaded."

The JSON Map

Snapchat *does* give you the dates, but they hide them in a separate file called memories_history.json.

This file is a map. It says: "Link A belongs to June 12th, 2019."

The problem? Your phone's gallery app can't read that map. It only looks at the image file itself.

Method: Rebuilding the Timeline (Technical / Value)

To fix this, you have to "stitch" the data from the JSON file back into the image files.

The Tradeoff

Doing this manually for thousands of files requires coding knowledge or specialized software.

The Steps

  • Extract the JSON and the images
  • Match the filenames to the JSON entries
  • Update the EXIF "Date Taken" field for each file
  • Move the files to your gallery

The Limitation

If you miss a file or the JSON entry is slightly different, the whole sequence breaks. It's a high-stakes puzzle.

The Automated Timeline Fix

This is a core reason why LeaveSnap exists.

We don't just download the files; we read the "map" and automatically embed the original dates, locations, and timestamps into every single JPEG and MP4.

When you import our archive into Google Photos or iCloud, everything lands exactly where it belongs in your timeline.

Preserve your timeline with LeaveSnap.

The Outcome: A Searchable History

A library without dates is just a mess. A library with metadata is a legacy.

Save your future self the frustration of a disorganized gallery and preserve the "when" along with the "what."
