The New Export Format
If you recently requested your Snapchat data, you might have been surprised to see 37 separate ZIP files instead of one.
This is Snapchat's new approach to handling large memory archives. Instead of delivering one massive file, they now split exports into ~2GB chunks.
What Changed and Why
Previously, Snapchat would package your entire export into a single ZIP file. For users with thousands of memories spanning years, this could result in files exceeding 50GB.
- Download failures due to file size limits
- Browser timeouts during the download process
- Difficulty managing massive single files
Snapchat's solution was to partition the data into manageable 2GB chunks, similar to how large file downloads are often split across multiple parts.
Understanding the Multi-ZIP Structure
When you receive your export email, you'll see something like this:
mydata~1769382587029.zip(1.98 GiB)mydata~1769382587029-2.zip(2 GiB)mydata~1769382587029-3.zip(2 GiB)- ... and so on for 30+ files
- The first ZIP typically contains the metadata files (
memories_history.jsonandmemories_history.html) - The remaining ZIPs contain partitioned raw data files
Which ZIP File Do You Need?
Here's the critical insight: You only need ONE ZIP file - the one containing the metadata.
For LeaveSnap Users
Upload the ZIP file that contains either:
memories_history.json, ormemories_history.html
This is usually the first ZIP in the list (the one without a number suffix, or ending in -1.zip).
Why Only One?
LeaveSnap doesn't extract your memories from the ZIP files themselves. Instead, we:
- Parse the
memories_history.jsonor.htmlfile - Extract the download URLs for each memory
- Download your photos and videos directly from Snapchat's CDN
The other 36 ZIPs contain raw data files that we don't need because we fetch everything fresh from Snapchat's servers.
How to Identify the Right ZIP
If you're unsure which ZIP contains the metadata file, here's how to check:
Method 1: File Size Pattern
The metadata file is relatively small. Look for the ZIP that's slightly smaller than the others (often the first one).
Method 2: Quick Peek
- Download the first ZIP file
- Open it with your computer's built-in ZIP viewer (don't extract)
- Look for a folder called
json/orhtml/ - If you see
memories_history.jsonormemories_history.html, that's the one
Common Questions
"Do I need to download all 37 files?"
"What if I already downloaded all of them?"
That's fine! Just upload the first one. The others can be deleted to save space.
"Will this affect my export quality?"
Not at all. LeaveSnap downloads your memories at full original quality directly from Snapchat, regardless of how many ZIP files they sent you.
"What if the metadata is in a different ZIP?"
In rare cases, the metadata might be in a different file. If the first ZIP doesn't work, try the second one. The metadata file is always in one of the ZIPs.
The Bottom Line
Snapchat's new multi-ZIP format looks overwhelming, but it's actually simpler than it appears:
- Download the first ZIP file from your export email
- Check that it contains
memories_history.jsonor.html - Upload that single file to LeaveSnap
- Ignore the other 36 files
We'll handle the rest - downloading, organizing, and preserving all your memories with original dates and metadata intact.
